Why You May Need a Tooth Removed

A dental extraction will be booked in our Guelph dentist office if Dr. Wat determines it is necessary for your overall oral health. Upon a complete oral exam, Dr. Wat can the development of teeth on X-Rays in addition to the results of your oral exam, and can determine if a tooth needs to be removed. Some reasons for extracting a tooth may be:

  • Wisdom teeth growing in

  • A tooth located too close to a nerve

  • A diseased tooth

  • A tooth that has broken and its roots are deep in the gum line

Types of Dental Extractions

There are two different types of dental extractions—the simple dental extraction that is performed by a Dentist, or a surgical dental extraction that sometimes requires a dentist or an oral surgeon. A simple dental extraction is route taken when a tooth is visible and fully erupted through the gum line. During this procedure, a dentist will use instruments to loosen the tooth for removal. For a simple extraction, local anaesthesia is injected in the gum line to numb the area. Although this type of anaesthesia gives numbing, you may be able to feel a bit of pressure as Dr. Wat pushes the tooth.

A surgical dental extraction is preferred when a tooth is not visible in the mouth. At Stonegate Dental, Dr. Gokhan Shevket  is the associate for wisdom teeth surgery, and performs the surgical removal of wisdom teeth. During either a tooth removal or wisdom teeth removal, small incisions are made on the gum line to make room to remove the tooth. Sometimes, the surgeon may also need to cut a bit of bone or tooth to complete the extraction. For a surgical dental extraction, anaesthesia is given through an intravenous (IV), which induces conscious sedation. Some patients may need general anaesthesia depending on health conditions.

Dr. Wat, Dr. Shevket and the Stonegate Dental team will help make sure you are comfortable during procedures. If you have any questions or need some of the steps clarified, Dr. Wat is more than happy to help ease your mind. Depending on your procedure, Dr. Wat and Dr. Shevket will let you know what type of recovery time and follow ups you need. Our goal is to help each patient walk out of our dentist office with the information and care they need to recover.
